Databases

Brunel Library provides access to a wide range of subscription databases, both full-text and bibliographic, where you may search for research literature, news and data. Browse the A-Z list below or, if you are not sure which database to use, consult the relevant Subject Guide to get recommendations on the best database for your search. 

To help you locate certain types of resources you may find the following guides helpful: 

Access is restricted to current students and staff of 村花论坛 for licensing and technical reasons. Some licence agreements may exclude access to databases and their contents from certain countries. It is your responsibility to comply with the terms and conditions of the relevant licence agreements. For more information, see the copyright web page on databases.

The Library sometimes makes resources available on a trial basis to evaluate them. If a trial has been activated link to the trial will be available via the database/platform name in the alphabetical A-Z.

Annual Reviews publishes authoritative reviews in 40 focused disciplines within the Biomedical, Life, Physical, and Social Sciences with access to volumes until 2008, only. NB: The Library no longer subscribes to this database so there is no access to articles published since 2009. The exception to this is 'Annual Review of Psychology' where we have access from 2020 to current.

Provides access to over 70 full-text American Psychological Society (APA) books on psychology, therapy and health published during 2016 and 2017.

APA PsycArticles is a database of full-text articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association.

Psychology and related topics; APA PsycInfo contains abstracts of articles from almost 2300 journals, dissertations and books, from 1872 to date. Over 50,000 references are added annually. Provides access to more than 40 ebooks on electronic and computer engineering published by Artech House.

Includes access to all online ASCE Journals (32 journals - 1983 to present). All full-text papers are provided in PDF format, and these may be searched by selecting the "All Digital Journal Papers" option within the search utility. Civil Engineering database subject headings may be searched on the ASCE's .

The ASME Digital Collection is the repository of current and archival literature featuring: ASME's Transaction Journals from 2000 to the present and Conference Proceedings from 2002 to the present.

BFI Player replaces the former BFI Inview service which provided access to more than 11,000 archive films selected by the BFI National Archive. The images can be browsed according to broad political and economical themes. In 2022 the BFI plans to make available a new service for UK libraries based on BFI Player. The content on this service will come from the BFI National Archive as well as national, regional and cultural partners, including material not available on BFI Player. We also plan to make this service available to other educational institutions.

Life sciences and biomedical research covering pre-clinical and experimental research, methods and instrumentation, animal studies, and more. JISC Collections has licensed the BIOSIS Previews Backfile 1969-2008 in perpetuity and this is now freely available to all UK universities. Thomson Reuters has given our users free access to BIOSIS Citation Index backfile too. For the avoidance of doubt, the Library does not subscribe to the current file from 2009 onwards, so you will not be able to access citations and previews published after 2008. Select BIOSIS Citation Index or BIOSIS Previews from the 'select a database' tab on Web of Knowledge to begin searching. This abstract only database is updated weekly. Bloomberg

Bloomberg is a global financial markets database providing economic and business news, analytics and real time pricing for over 5 million securities world-wide. It also includes extensive historical pricing and stock charts. 

Bloomberg terminals (computers) are available in the Financial Resources Suite, BANN 230a. You will need an individual account to use the terminal. If you do not already have an account, you can create one at the terminal.

Berg Fashion Library

Berg Fashion Library provides access to a diversity of resources including Berg encyclopaedia of world dresses, reference works, e-books, images, as well as museum directory and exhibition archives.

Bloomsbury Fashion Business Cases

Access to real-world cases on challenges facing the fashion business, such as sustainability, technology, ethics and leadership.

A collection of 22 leading medical journals on specialist clinical areas, public health and evidence-based medicine published BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. The Library reinstated the subscription to this database and access to current articles has been restored.

The University subscribes to Box of Broadcasts (BoB), a service which works alongside our ERA Licence and allows staff and students to record and access broadcasts, even after they have aired, under the licence terms. The British Cartoon Archive is a library, archive and gallery dedicated to the history of British cartooning over the last two hundred years. Located at the University of Kent in Canterbury, it holds the national collection of cartoons of political and social comment published in British newspapers and magazines. The British Cartoon Archive Digitisation Project funded by JISC through its Digitisation Programme, has digitised artwork dating back to 1904 and includes work by W.K. Haselden, Will Dyson, Sidney Strube, David Low, Vicky, Emmwood, Michael Cummings, Ralph Steadman, Mel Calman, Nicholas Garland, Chris Riddell, Carl Giles, Martin Rowson, and Steve Bell, amongst many others. Material from the BCA is still being accrued, with contemporary politics strongly represented throughout the collections. Access is free of charge for educational purposes. Index of 350 British and selected European journals with more than 175,000 references to journal articles in the fields of education and training, from 1976 to date. This abstract only database is updated quarterly. Use Article Linker (AL) to check for full text online sources.
This database moved to EBSCOhost from ProQuest in August 2014 - if you have any alerts running at you should be able to access these but you will need to set up the same alerts at EBSCOhost to ensure continuity.

British Library Newspapers Parts 1 and 2 1800-1900 is the most significant digital collection of British historic newspapers. provides access to approximately 70 national, regional and local 19th century British newspapers. New conservation and imaging techniques and a new cross-searchable platform adopted by the British Library offers unparalleled access and discoverability to this valuable historical and cultural archive. The content totals over three million pages and reflects the social and political developments of the time. Find influential national and regional newspapers representing different political and cultural segments of British society. Gale NewsVault permits cross-searching of the majority of the British Library's collections of historical newspapers published between 1800 to 1900.

British Library Sounds is the new name for Archival Sound Recordings. 50,000 recordings and their associated documentation from the Library’s extensive collections of unique sound recordings which come from all over the world and cover the entire range of recorded sound: music, drama and literature, oral history, wildlife and environmental sounds. NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) provides free access to the British National Formulary (BNF) and British National Formulary for Children to all members of higher education institutions. NICE Evidence search, https://www.evidence.nhs.uk/, also provides access to BNF content. BNF is published jointly by BMJ Group and Pharmaceutical Press. For more details see: .

British Nursing Database (BND) is a full-text version of the British Nursing Index (BNI), a leading bibliographic database. It includes more than 300 full-text journals (1926 - current, N.B. some titles are embargoed by up to 12 months) and supports the practice, education, research, and development for nurses, midwives, health visitors, and healthcare assistants working in the UK or following UK practice.

British Nursing Database (BNI) is a leading bibliographic database. It supports the practice, education, research, and development for nurses, midwives, health visitors, and healthcare assistants working in the UK or following UK practice. It is the sister product to British Nursing Database (BND).

British Periodicals traces the changing attitudes and assumptions of British Writers over a period of 250 years. It consists of 460 periodical runs published from the 1680s to the 1930s, hosted on the new ProQuest integrated platform (this has the option to search other databases, too).

The expanded version of the CINAHL index, CINAHL Plus provides an even wider scope of nursing and allied health journals, as well as a higher number of records, full-text and cited references. Electronic Theses Online Service: Access to records of over 250K doctoral theses from UK Higher Education institutions, with full text availability for an increasing number.

This index of over 32,000 records covers the history of European exploration as well as portrayals of native American peoples. It is offered free via the EBSCOhost platform. Published in co-operation with the John Carter Brown Library, it is a comprehensive guide to printed records about the Americas written in Europe before 1750 from European Americana: A Chronological Guide to Works Printed In Europe Relating to the Americas, 1493-1750.

Financial and other data on all UK and Irish companies, small, medium and large. Financial data is available for up to 20 years. Stock data is included for public companies. Searches can be made for individual companies and companies that meet your criteria; peer comparison and other tools are available. eHRAF World Cultures is an online cross-cultural and ethnographic database that contains descriptive information on all aspects of cultural and social life. The annually-growing eHRAF database is organized by cultures and ethnic groups, and every document is subject-indexed at the paragraph level, facilitating precise retrieval within documents.

eHRAF Archaeology is an online cross-cultural database containing information on world’s prehistory. The annually-growing eHRAF database is organized by archaeological traditions and the documents are subject-indexed at the paragraph level. eHRAF Archaeology is a unique resource designed to facilitate comparative archaeological studies.

VitalSource Bookshelf is the platform the IET uses to provide digital copies of the IET Wiring Regulations and other supplementary materials, such as our Codes of Practice and Guides. The platform is straightforward to use and allows you to download books for offline viewing, print pages and make highlights.

The London Broadcasting Company / Independent Radio News audio archive consists of thousands of reel-to-reel tapes in a collection that runs from 1973 to 1996. This digitised collection focuses on the most noteworthy content – thousands of hours of recordings relating to news and current affairs. Formerly hosted at the BUFVC Archives (in collaboration with Bournemouth University’s Centre for Broadcasting History) the content is being moved to Learning on Screen and may not be available in 2022.

Access to 24 electronic reference books from IGI Global (formally IDEA), including Handbooks of Research and Encyclopedias. Topics covered include information security and ethics, knowledge management, e-business, web technologies, and HCI.

A collection containing all publications from INFORMS, which specialises in Operations Research and Analytics. It includes peer reviewed journals (many highly ranked) and magazines containing article on topics including operations research, analytics, management science, economics, behavioural science, statistics, artificial intelligence, data science and applied mathematics. Also available is the TutORials in OR book series.

InfoSci-Journals provides access to all Information Science journals published between 2008 and 2013 from IGI Global (formally IDEA). These peer-reviewed journals focused on cutting-edge, specialised topics in advanced technology research as well as the organisational, managerial, behavioural, and social implications of technology. (NB: usually no access is available to content from 2014 onwards or prior to 2008).

Provides access to the current IOP journals and the IOP historical archive, giving access to the full text of most journals on the IOP Science platform since 1874. This also includes access to a selection of IOP eBooks from 2018 – 2020.

Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) proceedings published between 2001 to date. Also inlcuded is the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) archive which contains every peer-reviewed technical paper published between 1836 and 2001.

Provides access to the full text of 18 IMechE journals, from 1847 to date, now published by SAGE, covering all aspects of mechanical engineering from 1847 to the present day. Each of the other 18 journals, including the 16 proceedings of the IMechE, is focused on particular area of engineering to offer a greater depth of coverage in mechanical engineering.

This collection is the product of a partnership between the Bodleian Library and ProQuest to conserve, catalogue and digitise over 65,000 documents printed between 1508–1939, drawn from the Bodleian’s John Johnson Collection of Printed Ephemera. It depicts various aspects of everyday life in Britain in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Oxford Handbooks Online includes access to in-depth, high-level articles by scholars at the top of their field. Each handbook offers thorough introductions to topics and a critical survey of the current state of scholarship. The chapters in the handbooks are useful for finding background and theories, and for references to other sources – great for identifying key articles.

Brunel provides access to current and historical business and management handbooks, and to older, but still relevant, handbooks in economics and finance, criminology and music. This unique resource was developed in partnership by the Bodleian Libraries, the Royal Archives and ProQuest is now openly available. It contains all the personal journals of Queen Victoria (141 volumes and over 43,000 pages, currently for the period up to 1840 with further releases planned throughout this Diamond Jubilee year). The journals previously were only accessible by appointment at the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle. In addition to autograph diaries begun by the youthful Princess Victoria, there are edited versions from her later years, redacted and transcribed by the Queen’s daughter, Princess Beatrice. The site includes an interactive timeline, selections from Queen Victoria’s sketchbooks, and essays about aspects of Queen Victoria’s life, authored by Sir Roy Strong, Laurence Goldman and Peter Ward-Jones.

Refinitiv Workspace combines exceptional data, news and content coverage with cutting-edge web technology that is fast, light and intuitive. Refinitiv Workspace provides access to company financial data and economic indicators as well as news, analytics and productivity tools. Full functionality is accessible via the University Horizon software and some capability through web and mobile platforms. The database incorporates both Datastream and Thomson Reuters’ T1.com which used to be on separate platforms.

DataStream’s easy to use Excel Add-in (only via the Horizon software) allows you to create datasheets with different variables, both static and time series, edit and analyse the results or upload on to analytics software such as EViews and SPSS. The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757 - 1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media. The 700 or so bound volumes of newspapers and news pamphlets were published mostly in London, however there are also some English provincial, Irish and Scottish papers, and a few examples from the American colonies, Europe and India.

An international database of Shakespeare on film, television and radio hosted by the British Universities Film & Video Council. It holds over 6,500 records dating from the 1890s to the present day.

TVTiP is a fully searchable database of the programmes listed in television listings magazine TVTimes from September 1955 to March 1985. The BUFVC manages this databases on behalf of Bournemouth University. To access the database select "Sign in" and search for Brunel as your home institution.

Twentieth-Century Drama contains over 1,900 published plays from throughout the English-speaking world, covering the history of modern drama from the 1890s to the present day. The final version will contain 2,500 plays.

Clarivate's Web of Science Core Collection indexes journals and conference proceedings in the arts and humanities, social science and science and technology, providing abstracts to the majority of peer-reviewed articles, from 1970 to date, hosted on the Web of Science platform. This abstract only database is updated weekly. Also includes BIOSIS Citation Index (up to 2008), Medline and SciELO Citation Index. Use Article Linker (AL) to check for full text online sources.

Clarivate also provides an open access tool called - a free, easy-to-use browser plugin that helps you save time accessing full-text journal articles by bringing your institutional subscriptions as well as open access content into your workflow at your point of need. Kopernio works where you do, on campus, off-campus at home or when traveling to conferences. The browser extension is integrated with over 20,000 academic websites including Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar.
